Today we cover episodes 3.02, “Blood is the New Black”, and 3.03, “Kingdom of the Blind”. No one will be surprised but it’s just more ableism! We hate everyone! Wren has daddy issues, Hanna is incredibly violent, Lucas is a bad boy now, Aria loves the cops, and, unfortunately, Ezra still exists. Thank god for Melissa and Meredith’s highjinks to bring some levity to these episodes! Our bar for Emily’s fashion is so low, and also, can Mona sing more? Please? Give us something.

Content notes: Apart from stuff in PLL itself, which we don’t usually warn for, we discuss familial violence towards disabled people from 10:20 to 10:49, and addiction, suicide, and ableism in Hedda Gabler and Ethan Frome from 49:45 to 55:53.

Chickpeas Oh My Gosh!
  • Cameron recommends air frying chickpeas, especially when it’s too hot to turn your oven on. Then you can put them on a salad if you want!
A salad with avocados, greens, tomatoes, carrots, feta cheese, and air fryer-roasted chickpeas on top
Deepa’s Literary Analysis
  • Ella is leading a discussion in English class about Henrik Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler, which is about a rich woman in the late 1800s who spends the play manipulating people, with horrific ends for both those people and herself
  • The make-up test Emily takes is about Edith Wharton’s Ethan Frome which, as Cameron put it, can be summed up as ableism on a sled
  • Academics just love doing Freudian psychoanalysis of fictional characters but Deepa is skeptical
Things We Referenced Related to PLL
  • Aria destroying Emily and Ali’s baby room when she joins the A Team
  • Mona giving Hanna a makeover in the hospital after she hit her with her car
Things We Referenced Completely Unrelated to PLL
  • Teeth lore, including teeth as symbolism for aging in Kate Atkinson’s Behind the Scenes at the Museum, teeth as a murderer’s trophies in the show Sharp Objects, and vagina dentata and the 2007 movie Teeth (a must-watch)
  • In more Freudian analysis, men’s daddy issues are apparently because of the Oedipal complex (thanks Talkspace)
Fashion Analysis

For best outfits, Cameron liked what Emily’s gray tank top look because Cameron herself might have worn that, while Deepa appreciated Caleb’s very gay mesh cardigan

For worst, we both hated Aria outfits: Deepa disliked the gray dress with horrible pleating in part because Deepa might not have hated the belt buckle straps on another dress, while Cameron abhorred Aria’s peplum top over a green skirt
